B.C. Proclaims Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Thanks to the efforts of a B.C. lung cancer patient, the Province of British Columbia has once again proclaimed November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. It is a symbolic but meaningful act of recognition for thousands of British Columbians who are living with lung cancer, as well as their loved ones and care providers.

Local governments also issue proclamations. It is usually a straightforward process detailed on the municipal website. Finding them once they’ve been proclaimed is sometimes the part! Try searching their site for “lung cancer” and “proclamation”. So far, we’ve found a handful of municipalities that have recognized November 2023 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Let us know in the comments if you know of any others!

Registration is now open for the 2023 B.C. Lung Cancer Patient Summit! This year’s event is being held at the Nikkei Centre in Burnaby on November 23rd, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. There will also be an option to attend remotely. Click this link to register via Lung Cancer Canada. There is no cost to attend, thanks to Lung Cancer Canada and the BC Cancer Foundation.

Members of our little group have been involved with this event every step of the way. We have been fortunate to work with the gracious event host, Lung Cancer Canada, in helping to develop the programme of speakers (and some of us will also be appearing on a patient panel!). We are thrilled to have experts like Dr. Cheryl Ho and Dr. Renelle Myers from BC Cancer, who will be discussing the latest in treatments and research on air pollution and lung cancer risks, respectively.

While the event is geared towards patients, caregivers and other interested parties are also welcome to attend. It’s part of our efforts to change the conversation on lung cancer, fight stigma, raise awareness and improve outcomes for lung cancer patients across the province!
